PhD in Computer Vision for Video Understanding

Do you want to advance the state-of-the-art research in computer vision research for video recognition and understanding? Video and its fundamental tasks such as segmentation and tracking are currently among the most important components of robotic applications, such as self-driving cars, security or healthcare. However, learning these tasks typically requires huge amounts of data, especially when relying on data-hungry deep neural networks. In this project, you will first build efficient techniques for scaling up the annotation of objects in videos and then, you will advance the capabilities of state-of-the-art video segmentation models towards deeper video understanding.

The Section for Visual Computing at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a fully-funded 3-year PhD position starting in September 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter). This PhD will be a collaboration between DTU Compute and the Computer Science Laboratory (LIX) at École Polytechnique, Paris, France. The PhD will be mainly located at DTU in Lyngby, Copenhagen, Denmark but also be expected to spend a few months during the program in Paris, France. The PhD project will be co-supervised by Assistant Professor Dimitrios Papadopoulos from the Section of Visual Computing at DTU Compute, Lyngby, Copenhagen, Denmark and Assistant Professor Vicky Kalogeiton from LIX, École Polytechnique, Paris, France.

AI Scientist, AI Engineer, Research Scientist and Post-Doctoral Associate in the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and NYU Multimedia and Visual Computing Lab

AI and Robotics Researcher Positions at NYU Abu Dhabi

Project: Environment Perception, Distributed Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, 3D Scene Understanding and Robot Learning by Demonstration

Position Description: The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) and NYU Multimedia and Visual Computing (MMVC
) Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applicants to apply for the open Postdoc associate, AI scientist, research scientist and AI Engineer positions in the Project Environment Perception, Distributed Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, 3D Scene Understanding and Robot Learning by Demonstration.

CAIR and MMVC invite qualified applicants with a doctorate degree in the areas of electrical, or computer, or mechanical engineering, or related field to apply. A strong publication record is encouraged and previous experience in areas such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), Computer vision, Deep learning, Sensor fusion, Autonomous Robots, and Embedded systems development is desired. The position is open to PhDs with background in robotics, controls, AI, and/or computer vision. The candidate is expected to work in a highly collaborative multi-disciplinary environment with other post-doctoral associates, PhD and undergraduate students, as well as faculty members. It is expected that applicants have a strong publication record in the aforementioned areas. The applicants are also expected to have strong analytical, communication, and writing skills.

The successful applicant will work on several projects including development of distributed SLAM systems and related technologies. This will include development of distributed environment perception, sensor fusion, 3D modeling, and SLAM algorithms enabling autonomous agents to operate in unknown dynamic environments. As part of this work, the successful applicant will work on sensor data processing and data fusion, 3D scene understanding, semantic feature extraction and semantic SLAM, multi-robot distributed SLAM, hardware-aware energy-efficient implementation, and navigation and path planning in complex dynamic uncertain environments. The algorithmic development will need to take into account various uncertainties and possible adversarial elements wherein some agents in a swarm have been modified by an adversary. The work will include algorithm design, prototype implementation (e.g., in Matlab/Python), deployment (to the agents' onboard computational hardware using the Robot Operating System), and experimental testing (on unmanned vehicle swarms).

A solid competency with the standard implementation tools used in autonomous robots and embedded systems (e.g., C, C++, Linux, MATLAB, Python, Robot Operating System, Ardupilot, Solidworks, Gazebo Physics Engine Simulator) is required.

The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. UAE does not does not levy income tax. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. For consideration, applicants need to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae with full publication list, degree transcript, statement of research interests, and at least two letters of reference, all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please email Professor Yi Fang at yfang@nyu.edu.

About CAIR: The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) is a leading research center led by Profs. Tzes, Khorrami, and LeCun as Director and Co-Directors, respectively. Its mission is to develop cutting edge technologies in robotics and AI (Autonomous Robots, SLAM, Navigation, Perception, Human-Brain Interface, Deep Learning and their Security, etc.). CAIR has state of the art autonomous unmanned vehicles (aerial, ground, legged, and underwater) robotic systems experimental facilities. There are significant collaborations among faculty at NYU Abu Dhabi and New York in creation and activities of CAIR.

About MMVC: Coupled with New York University’s mission to become a fully connected global network university, faculty from NYU New York and Abu Dhabi created NYU Multimedia and Visual Computing Lab as an intellectual hub for faculty, researchers and students from both New York and Abu Dhabi campuses, who come together to study and address the key challenges in multimedia and visual data processing. With the advancement in data acquisition techniques, we have observed an exponential increase of visual data that present in different domains and modalities, such as, 2D images, 2D videos, 2D sketches, 2.5D depth images, 3D point cloud, 3D meshed surface and so on. We are, therefore, faced with an ever-increasing demand for approaches towards automatic visual data processing, understanding and analysis. Visual data are often featured with high complexity, subject to large structural variations, intrinsic imprecision and ambiguity, and exhibit heavy noise and incompleteness. For instance, a car built by different manufactures is likely to be significantly distinct in 3D shape representation; a building viewed from different view angles is likely to be distinct in 2D view representation; and a horse sketched by different individuals with experiential and cognitive difference is likely to be distinct in sketch representation.

About NYUAD: NYU Abu Dhabi is a degree-granting research university with a fully integrated liberal arts and science undergraduate program in the Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Engineering. NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU New York, and NYU Shanghai, form the backbone of NYU’s global network university, an interconnected network of portal campuses and academic centers across six continents that enable seamless international mobility of students and faculty in their pursuit of academic and scholarly activity. This global university represents a transformative shift in higher education, one in which the intellectual and creative endeavors of academia are shaped and examined through an international and multicultural perspective. As a major intellectual hub at the crossroads of the Arab world, NYUAD serves as a center for scholarly thought, advanced research, knowledge creation, and sharing, through its academic, research, and creative activities.

Location Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

EOE/AA/Minorities/Females/Vet/Disabled/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity Employer and UAE Nationals are encouraged to apply.

NYU is an equal opportunity employer committed to equity, diversity, and social inclusion.
