Post-Doctoral position in Deep-learning for urban search and rescue drone missions

Job environment
The post-doctorate will be based in the Brest campus of IMT Atlantique joining team RAMBO of CNRS Lab-STICC, UMR 6285 and will be cosupervised by Ass. Prof Panagiotis Papadakis (team coleader) and Prof. Guillaume Moreau of team INUIT. The research fields of RAMBO team encompass cognitive robotics, robot learning, ambient assisted living and human-robot interaction while the group possesses state-of-the-art research facilities and equipment, notably a LivingLab in eHealth as well as diverse service/field robots and manipulators.

This position is offered in the context of the project LEASARD - Low-Energy deep neural networks for Autonomous Search-And-Rescue Drones – financed by CominLabs and is a collaborative project between research teams 2AI, RAMBO and INUIT of Lab-STICC in Brest, LS2N / Armen in Nantes and IRL Crossing in Australia. The purpose of the project is to develop optimized deep neural networks for vision and control of drones, by capitalizing on recent advances on event-cameras coupled with color cameras and dedicated FPGA hardware for embedded processing.

Job description
The postdoctoral researcher will undertake research in the field of deep-learning for vision and control of an aerial drone destined to operated in urban search and rescue (USAR) missions.

Of particular interest will be the development of deep neural networks using event-camera images alongside conventional color images so as to favor network sparsity and complementarity when implemented on dedicated FPGAs capable of on-demand reprogramming. The goal thus consists in advancing the state-of-the-art in terms of efficiency of deep neural networks used during the drone mission for vision and control, so as to increase the operational autonomy while moderating the impact in the overall efficacy. To this end, the paradigms of either end-to-end (mapless) or conventional SLAM-based navigation can be investigated depending on expected benefits and the scenario constraints. The development of algorithms will be initially sought via simulation tools and environments for drone navigation and progressively transferred to the real sensors and hardware.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in close collaboration with project partners. Upon joint agreement, the 1st year of postdoc can be concatenated with an additional 1-year postdoc at the LS2N/Armen team in Nantes, under the co-supervision of Dr. Isabelle Fantoni. The project provides necessary funding to cover publication, mobility and working environment expenses.

Candidature procedure
Full details on the position and the candidature procedure are available in the link below "More info"

    • Lead interactions with the scientific and operations functions (e.g., spectral analysis or supply chain management) to identify, catalogue, develop and characterize ML use cases and value-generating data science opportunities for the respective business areas.
    • Evaluate, prioritize, and plan the staged execution of data science projects.
    • Independently and in teams build, test, and deploy end to end data science solutions.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert on data science, ML, and statistical analysis.
    • Build, develop, and grow the data science capabilities for both our data science staff and our functional area scientific staff via training, coaching, and mentoring.

    • Set the standard with IT for applied machine learning at MRL.

In order to excel in this role, you will more than likely have:

    • A PhD with a minimum of 0-5 years’ experience, 12 years’ (for MSc) or 14 years’ (for BSc) in ML focused academia or industry
    • Education and or related experience in statistical and computational ML (Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Material Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences).
    • Demonstrated experience with the mechanics of training and deploying ML models
    • Strong and broad knowledge of ML and statistics, with the ability to deep dive as well as converse at high technical level with architects and senior scientists. Computer Vision and/or other deep learning experience a must.
    • Strong coding skills (python and/or R, including pytorch or tensorflow) for good aspects of data engineering, ML, and statistical modeling and analysis
    • Experience bridging the gap between domain subject and data science groups, with understanding of priority and business targets.
    • Exposure with pharmaceutical formulation development, and characterization is a plus, but not a must.

Research Engineer in Synthetic Data Generation and Augmentation

We conduct research on state-of-the-art deep generative models that are used to enable real-world Bosch systems to be data-efficient. We are looking for a research engineer to support us both in academic research activities and in transferring those results to real-world systems.

The goal of this position is to develop new learning algorithms for generating better training datasets, making algorithms robust, reliable, and safe when learning even from limited/biased datasets. In particular, the focusing is on the use of generative models for data augmentation: generation of synthetic data using both computer graphics and image-synthesis with generative models (i.e., VAE, GANs, diffusion models), as well as techniques for domain transfer.

    Concretely, your tasks will include:
    - Develop and prototype novel approaches for synthetic data generation and augmentation using deep generative models and computer graphics techniques, and apply them on real-world problems in collaboration with our partners from Bosch business units.
    - Support the rapid transfer from research prototypes into products. Ensure high coding quality for research assets to facilitate transfer to industrialization partners.
    - Be part of applying our data synthesis tools to a large variety of applications within Bosch.
