Research Scientists, Research Engineers, and PhD interns

The Samsung AI Research Centre in Toronto is looking for research scientists, research engineers, and PhD interns. Our centre is one of seven Samsung AI centres around the world and part of the larger Samsung Research organization. Our lab consists of about 30 research scientists and engineers in the fields of computer vision, NLP, and systems, including a constant stream of visiting faculty and interns. We work at the intersection of fundamental research and industrial applications, with the goal of publishing our research at the most elite scientific venues and having a product impact on Samsung.

One area of interest for us is image manipulation on mobile phones. With the recent advances in computational photography, mobile phones can already take photos of exceptional quality. We aim to further improve on that quality and add exciting new image manipulation capabilities using modern computer vision and ML tools, such as burst photography, GANs, and implicit representations. We are looking for junior research scientists and PhD interns who are interested in working with us on this exciting problem. Ideal candidates would already have some exposure to low-level computer vision and ML tools, be motivated to work on cutting-edge research with practical applications, and be strong independent researchers.

Another area of interest is video understanding, including searching and interacting with instructional videos, livestream video task monitoring, and activity modelling and recognition. Addressing these challenges in a weakly supervised, real-time setting not only requires a deep understanding of cutting-edge ML and CV tools and techniques, but also the creative combination of visual and linguistic modalities, as well as addressing challenges in human-AI interaction. We are looking for experienced researchers with a strong background in the above-mentioned subfields of AI, along with a curiosity to learn how to bring these pieces together to solve real-world problems.

PhD Candidate on Video Quality Assessment and Enhancement for Medical Services

A three-year PhD position on Video Quality Assessment and Enhancement for Medical Service is available at the Department of Computer Science, NTNU, in Gjøvik, Norway.

The new Norwegian National health and hospital plan 2020-2023 states that state-of-the-art technology should be taken advantage of, and priorities should be taken to ensure sustainable and financially viable solutions fulfilling the core values of the Norwegian healthcare system. The plan emphasizes on the use of video communication and other state-of-the-art technologies to not only provide a better service to patients leading to earlier detection of diseases, earlier treatment, and recovery but also reducing the workload and financial costs in the medical sector.

To follow this long-term plan, pilot studies in Norway have focused on the use of live video communication between the paramedics and doctors at the hospital. Such a video communication in medical services between paramedics in the field and doctors at the hospital makes enhancing and optimizing the quality of the videos used in medical services and so video quality assessment which is required as a basis for video enhancement crucially important. In this project, to facilitate better pre-hospital decision support, we focus on the quality assessment and enhancement of video communication in medical services

This PhD position is devoted to the development of a new framework to guarantee a high quality of visual information in video communications between the paramedics on the field and doctors in the hospital.

The main objectives of this work will be focused on the introduction of a new real-time optimization solution for efficient perceptual quality evaluation and enhancement of the delivered video stream. The solutions which most likely be based on using different deep learning and machine learning techniques must integrate the constraints and specificities related to the medical context and more particularly the decision support with the maximum of reliable and relevant visual information.

Application deadline: 29.05.2022
